There was heartbreak on day four of the Singha Beer Grand Slam of Darts, as both Mensur and Dimitri knocked out of the Grand Slam. After Danny Noppert had beaten Nathan Aspinall 5-2, Mensur needed to match his result against Raymond van Barneveld. Mensur would just come up short as he was beaten 5-3, after a brilliant display from Barney.
Dimi would depart the Grand Slam in the cruellest of ways, after he was defeated in a nine-dart shootout by Robert Thornton. Earlier in the night Dimi did his part as he beat Scott Waites 5-4, to put the pressure on both Thornton and Gerwyn Price who would play later that evening. The equations were simple, any Thornton win and Dimi would go through, Price win 5-2 or better then Dimi was through, 5-3 Price and it would be a shootout. The Price Thornton game ended in some controversy, as match official Russ Bray called the wrong score and Price check out to win 5-3, but the referee’s decision is final. So to a nine-dart shootout we went. Dimi would lose by 5 points, 345 to 340.
Regardless of last night very proud of both Dimitri and Mensur, with the Players Championship just over a week away both can achieve great things. So now it’s over to Glen, who plays Raymond van Barneveld tomorrow night.
